| I never
thought so. I got married as a Lance Corporal and had my first
child as a Sergeant. I lived comfortably and never went without
the necessities so if you manage your money and don't get into
debt, the pay is just fine. You won't be rolling in dough but
you will have what you need with some left over for what you want.
Some guys are on food stamps but that is due to poor financial
management. There are plenty more that are being paid the same
amount and are NOT on food stamps. There are exceptions but very
few.
I counsel my Marines and show them how to manage the
money they have. If they get into trouble, I show them how to
manage their financial resources and how to sacrifice in order
to get out of the debt. Of course many complain about the money
because they watch too much TV and want all the crap society
entices them to think they need. When they get out and get a
civilian job, they realize how good the money was in the military
and their attitude changes. Many seem to think they are being
underpaid and that if they get out and get a civilian job, they
will get paid so much more. Not only is that not often the case,
but then they have to pay for things they never had to before
like rent, food, medical, dental, etc. Many write back to me
and tell me how much harder it is and how they wished they were
still in the Corps.
