books [syn: booklover, book lover]
That's me but even though I read extremely slow, I
can't help but get into reading a good book (usually two or
three at a time). Here I will try to document my reading history
as far back as I can.
Books I've read

| Swift Silent,
and Surrounded |
MGYSGT Andrew A. Bufalo, et al. |
A collection of Marine stories similar to the
Chicken Soup for the Soul series. Three of my stories
are published in this book. (Autographed) |
| The Older
We Get, The Better We Were |
MGYSGT Andrew A. Bufalo, et al. |
The second book of marine Corps lore. Three of
my stories are published in this book, also.. |
| Flags of Our Fathers |
James Bradley |
The true story of the Marine flag-raisers
in the famous picture atop Mount Surabachi on Iwo Jima.
(Autographed) |
| The Marine Book |
Chuck Lawliss |
Could also be under "Pictorial." This
was the first Marine pic book that I got a long time ago
and gives some really good, high quality shots of life in
the Corps as well as history and background. |
| Marine! |
Burke Davis |
A biography of Lewis "Chesty" Puller.
He is the closest thing to "God" status in the
Marine Corps. His son's autobiography is pretty good, too. |
| Fortunate Son |
Lewis B. Puller, Jr. |
The autobiography of Lewis "Chesty"
Puller's son. Tragic ending after the book was published:
he committed suicide. |
| Boot |
Daniel da Cruz |
A good account of Marine bootcamp a few years
back when I went through bootcamp (1987). |
| Making the Corps |
Thomas Ricks |
An updated look at Marine bootcamp. |
| Fields of Fire |
James Webb |
It took forever to find a copy of this but it
is almost required reading for a Marine Officer. It is a
Vietnam book and worth the read. |
| First to Fight |
Lieutenant General Victor H. Krulak |
Where the history, reputation, and truth about
the United States Marine Corps meet. Within this 252-page
book you will find a combination of historical fact, interesting
background, and personal recollection from one of the men
who helped shape what the Marines are today. |
| Guidebook For Marines |
Marine Corps Association |
I got this in bootcamp and have read it several
times over the years. |
| One Tough Marine |
1stSgt Donald N. Hamblen, USMC (Ret.) |
This Sergeant lost his leg in a parachuting accident
but fought to stay in, serving with Recon in Vietnam. What
an inspiring story that makes anyone's complaints seem trivial. |
| Keepin Faith |
John and Frank Schaeffer |
I had high hopes for this and I was not disappointed.
This wonderful book ended up being 4 flavors of writing:
Dad's thoughts, Dad's letters, son's thoughts, son's letters.
Basically, it's about a rich son from a high-end yuppy existence
joining the Corps and how his father deals with his new
found admiration for the Corps. The world they came from
thinks the Marines are below sea level in the social strata
and the father becomes somewhat of an outcast when he see's
the Marine light. Like I said, I expected to like this book
a lot and it had some poignant parts that didn't let me
down. As a bonus, it had a lot of details about modern boot
camp. Well worth the read. |
| Faith of Our Sons: A Father's Wartime Diary |
Frank Schaeffer |
|
| Jarhead |
Anthony Swofford |
This book was unequivocally the worst book I’ve
ever read. It is so bad that I don’t even know where
to start to explain this travesty of the written word. From
the first page, I had to force myself to read every disgusting
word and only completed it to have the moral high ground
to expose this farce for what it’s worth: absolutely
nothing. Many times I slammed it shut in disgust not only
because it was rabble-rousing fiction, but that it had enough
grains of truth to sound believable to anyone who has never
served. More... |

| One Bullet Away: The Making Of
A Marine Corps Officer |
Nathaniel Fick |
Finished 5/21/06. Great book about the second
Gulf War. Maybe the best wartime memoir I've ever read.
I can only vouch for the parts through the Basic School
but if that was any indication of how accurate his stories
are, then the rest is really like being there. It was weird
to walk with him through the OCS and TBS portions and then
watch him slide into waters I know very little about. It
made me think how easy it would have been to keep going
if it was in the cards for me back in the late 90s. |
| The Few and the Proud |
Larry Smith |
I had high hopes for this book and while there
were some great parts, it really seemed to be a rambling,
unorganized collection of interviews. It was evident the
author performed the majority of his interviews at Parris
Island, ignoring San Diego. |
| Into The Crucible: Making Marines
for the 21st Century |
James B. Woulfe |
Thanks Marcia Beckwith. A detailed book that would
probably be more interesting to someone who has no clue
about what the Marine Corps is about. I'm afraid the "impossible"
obstacles decribed in this book are commonplace to me since
I've been in the Marine Corps so long. Good history about
the sacrifices Marine Corps heros have made. |

| About Face |
Col. David Hackworth |
Great story about a very decorated soldier who
fought in Korea and Vietnam only to blow the whistle on
the whole Vietnam fiasco and get drummed out of the Army
barely making it out alive. I really enjoyed it and learned
a lot from the book but considered it tragic how disillusioned
and bitter he got after dedicating his life to the Army.
Well worth the read. |

| Waterlilly |
Ella Cala Deloria |
This a surprisingly good book I had
to read in college. It is about an Indian tribe in the old
west but it really keeps your attention. I recommend it. |
| Charlie and the Chocolate Factory |
Roal Dahl |
The movie is a classic and the book is just as
good but might as well be a different title. Similar but
enough differences that you will enjoy new details not in
the movie. |
| Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator |
Roal Dahl |
Like the Dune series, the subsequent books get
weirder and weirder. I read this when I was a kid and there
were some disturbing content (grandma turning into a baby,
etc.) but that's what I remember. I do recall it was not
as childish as the first. |
| Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone |
J. K. Rowling |
Book 1. I didn't read this until I saw the movie.
Excellent book even for adults and the book and movie are
very similar. It makes it easier to picture the characters.
|
| Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets |
J. K. Rowling |
Book 2. Still really good and I dismissed the
odd feeling of an adult enjoying a "kids'" book.
This is simply great story-telling. |
| Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban |
J. K. Rowling |
Book 3. The best so far. I'm keeping just ahead
of the movies and I saw a preview for this. It looks like
it follows the book like the others. |
| Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire |
J. K. Rowling |
Book 4. The story continues and I really enjoyed
reading this, eeking out time during the day to curl up
with it. Harry has to compete through three dangerous events
during the year while dodging a mysterious, unknown force
trying to kill him. |
| Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix |
J. K. Rowling |
Book 5. This 800+ page behemoth was absolutely
a joy to read. All the characters are back and a great new
addition you'll love to hate: Professor Umbridge. Snape
is still as slimy as ever. The basic storyline is that they
form a group of wizards to battle the imminent return of
Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Read this book! |
| Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (8/15/05) |
J. K. Rowling |
Book 6. Another spectacular read with all the
characters you've come to love. This time, Harry gets individual
help from Dumbledore on learning more about Lord Voldemort's
dark past. Plenty of twists and turns, leaving the reader
on a knife's edge at the end. |
| The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn |
Mark Twain |
A classic I had to read in high school. Probably
banned now because of its use of certain words but I would
still let my kids read it. One of the few books I was required
to read that I actually enjoyed. |
| Jonathan Livingston Seagull |
Richard Bach |
This is the only book I ever read in one sitting
(I'm a painfully slow reader). I read it sitting on my cot
in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War in 1990-1991. It was
kind of weird for a book that everyone said you "had
to read." I don't know what the big deal was but it
was thin enough to get the "read in one sitting"
check in the box. |
| Back To The Future Part III |
Craig Shaw Gardner |
Another Saudi bored stiff result. As I recall,
it was a book written from the movie so it was like watching
tohe movie in your head. The book offered nothing new that
you didn't get in the movie. |
| The Hobbit |
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien |
I have it and I wrote that I finished it but I
don'tremember a thing from it. I should read it again. |
| The Red Badge of Courage |
Stephen Crane |
You've heard that this is a classic that must
be read? Well, it sucked. It was my first attempt at getting
to the classics and its thinness assured I would get to
it early. It was painful through each miserable page. I
guess it caused quite a stir when it came out but by the
time I read it, everyone else must have read all the interesting
stuff right out of it. Then again, maybe I'm just an uncouth
simpleton. |
| Lolita |
Vladimir Nabokov |
My first motivation to read this book was The
Police's reference to it in "Don't Stand So
Close To Me"
Loose talk in the classroom
To hurt they try and try
Strong words in the staff room
The accusations fly
It's no use, he sees her
He starts to shake and cough
Just like the old man in
That book by Nabakov
A poker buddy pointed it out when we were discussing
how many classic literary references were in songs by
The Police.
The second motivation is that I thought it was
another one of those famous books that had to be read.
Little did I know at the time that it was not a famous
book but an infamous one that is synonymous with sexual
desire toward young girls. Oops. But I thought it was
interesting that despite the content, there is not a single
vulgar word in the entire book, but still the most risque
reading I've ever done.
|
| The Silence of the Lambs |
Thomas Harris |
Delicious. I read this after watching the movie
many times and I savored every page. Entertainingly spooky. |
| Hannibal |
Thomas Harris |
I bought both The Silence of the Lambs
and this one together and treated them as one big book.
I love the Hannibal character and found both books very
entertaining and inspiring reading. Now before you report
me to the authorities, I was inspired by Hannibal's intelligence
and memory ability, not the whole eating his murder victims
thing. |
| To Kill a Mockingbird |
Harper Lee
|
(thanks Scott and Kris) |
| The DaVinci Code |
Dan Brown
|
Great book!!! Not only is the story well
written and exciting, the factoids about language are interesting.
I am a slow reader and I zipped through this book, even
slowing down at the end to savor. But I warn you that the
book has a lot of religious heresy to Christians who might
find the book offensive. I just read it as a work of fiction. |

comes to describing the nastiness of addiction and how to
get over it. Since he was in a program, he could use no
drugs so they had to pull two teeth and do a double root
canal on his two upper and lower front. The descripion was
almost as painful as the procedure. |
| Marley & Me |
John Grogan |
I looked forward to reading this book because
I love my dog Buster and I thought I could relate to a man
and his crazy dog. I expected more about the dog but what
I got was more about the owner's life, family, and thoughts
about more things outside his relationship with his dog
than I expected. I loved the parts about Marley but didn't
enjoy the details about the life of the family that much.
It was just my expectations so overall, I'd have to recommend
this to dog lovers with the caveat to expect a story about
the author's life thrown in. |

| The Little Guide To Your Well-Read Life |
Steve Leveen |
Incredible book that I really took to hear. Will
likely read it again since it had such an impact and next
time will go slower in order to incorporate more of its
advice. It gave some really good tips on getting the most
out of a reading program fro life. It also showed me that
listening to books "counts" as far as "reading"
the book. On a different note, I liked the quality of the
book itself. I never really noted this before on a book
but I liked the materials, the cover, the binding, the paper
used. |

| The Quotable Runner |
Edited by Mark Will-Weber |
|
| To The Edge |
Kirk Johnson |
The true story of a New York Times reporter who
covers the 135 mile Badwater Ultramarathon story and decides
to run it himself to find answers about himself, his family,
and his brother's suicide. He had never even run 15 miles
before starting to train for the Badwater, the most arduous
race in the world, starting at the lowest point in Death
Valley in July and ending 60 hours later at the highest
point in the United States. This book was almost a religious
experience for me and I almost doubled its weight by highlighting
so many pages. Truly inspiring and a roadmap for the mind,
body, and soul, considering I, too, am on a quest to run
this race in 2009. |

Finished 8/29/05. I wanted to read this book mainly
for the inspiration of the first 4 minute mile run. But
I did not enjoy this book because it was rather dry and
the story of that famous race didn't happen until 3/4 of
the way through the book. And he glossed right over and
past it. Mainly, it was an autobiography that I could not
really get into because it was an English guy in the 30s
and 40s. I trudged through and finished it only because
it was 250 pages. |

In true scientific fashion he covers fundamental concepts

of the universe we live in. |
| Broca's Brain |
Carl Sagan |
This was not as good as I hoped. It's a collection
of essays covering many subjects from space to God to magic.
Carl Sagan is famous for conveying complicated subjects
in terms that the average Jason can understand. This early
work must have been before he perfected that talent because
I found that following his logic was a bit rigorous. I don't
claim to be a genius but he throws around some concepts
that didn't matter how many times I read it, it wasn't getting
through. He spent way too much time disproving the work
of some wacko who thought that Biblical events were caused
by cosmic near misses. Too many pages, Dr. Sagan, if I may
respectfully point out. On a personal note, there were points
that made you think about the Universe and our place in
it. Also, I couldn't stop thinking that I'm reading his
deep thoughts and now he's dead. |

Clifford Stoll |
Tracking a hacker through cyberspace when the
technology was not all that advanced. |
| Masters of Deception |
Michelle Slatalla and Joshua Quittner |
Similar to Cuckoo's Egg but this is about groups
of hackers. |
| The Code Book |
Simon Singh |
About the history of ciphers, codes, and codebreaking.
This is probably the best book of its kind I’ve ever
read. What makes it so good is the way the author takes
a complicated subject and explains it in interesting and
understanding detail. At the end of the book, he offers
ten enciphered messages for you to solve, each getting harder
and harder. |

I really enjoyed this book. It told a really good
account of the founders of Google and how they rose from
two PH.D students to heading the biggest technological giant
since Microsoft. I could not put it down. |

BEST FOR LAST
The best book I've ever read is a science fiction work
called Replay by Ken Grimwood. My aunt read it and
then insisted that my father read it right away. After he was
done, he insisted that I read it. After reading it myself, I
read it again. I read it about once a year.
Basically it's about a man who dies on the first page,
then wakes up as himself but in his college days. He has all
his memories of his entire 40 year life, hence the title. I
just covered the first few pages so I'll stop there. READ THIS
BOOK!!!

| The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy* |

I gave it about 50 pages and according to my new
criteria, that's all it gets. The story had some humorous
moments but too "Monty Python-ish" British humor.
The actual story got so weird that I had to just roll my
eyes and accept that this was a series that I just would
never be able to get into. So be it. |
